An Implementation Agreement links FILKOM's Lab MGM with Hiroshima University's Learning Engineering Laboratory for joint research on digital concept maps.

In 2024, Fakultas Ilmu Komputer Universitas Brawijaya signed an Implementation Agreement on Research Fellowship with the Graduate School of Advanced Science and Engineering at Hiroshima University in Japan. It is, by most measures, the strongest formal academic tie that Lab MGM has built with a partner outside Indonesia.
The agreement set up an international research group chaired by Aryo Pinandito, who was head of Lab MGM at the time. On the Indonesian side, FILKOM describes the collaboration as involving the Sistem Informasi study program together with Lab MGM, working opposite Hiroshima's Learning Engineering Laboratory. According to FILKOM, the three units jointly provide research assistance, run experiments, and support publication of results, rather than one side simply hosting visiting researchers from the other.

The research theme that has anchored the partnership is the Kit-Build Concept Map, a digital concept mapping method developed by the Learning Engineering Laboratory to help teachers assess how well students understand a topic. FILKOM reports that the two sides continued this line of work into 2025, this time aimed at building predictive models that estimate a learner's intelligent understanding and progress from that concept map data, and that the continuation was again formalized through an Implementation Agreement rather than an informal arrangement.
A concept map is, in simple terms, a diagram that lays out how a set of ideas connect to each other. The Kit-Build variant asks a student to build their own map from a fixed kit of pieces, then compares it against a map built by an instructor, which gives a teacher a fast, structured read on where a student's understanding is thin. Turning that comparison into a predictive model, one that can flag likely gaps in understanding before a test does, is the kind of applied learning technology research that sits naturally alongside Lab MGM's broader interest in educational media and games.
For Lab MGM, the relationship is notable less for any single output and more for its structure. It is described by FILKOM as a standing agreement covering multiple years of joint work, not a one-time exchange visit, which puts it in a different category from most of the international contacts documented elsewhere in Lab MGM's partner history. Even so, this account is limited to what FILKOM has published about the agreement and its 2025 continuation, and does not go beyond that.
