  1. 01What the visit covered

fxMedia is a Singapore based studio working in immersive media, and it is the kind of company Lab MGM's leadership sought out during a December 2022 trip built around initiating cooperation with international partners in the interactive media field.

What the visit covered

Aryo Pinandito, then head of Lab MGM, and Herman Tolle, head of the MGM Research Group, visited fxMedia as part of a wider Singapore itinerary that also took in NTU's Centre for Augmented and Virtual Reality. FILKOM's account of the trip refers to fxMedia as an international industry partner and describes the conversation there as covering virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality, extended reality, and metaverse technology.

Alongside the technology discussion, the two sides explored the possibility of collaborative research in AR, VR, and metaverse topics. FILKOM's writeup describes this as an exploration of shared interests rather than a finished project, and there is no record of a signed research or partnership agreement resulting from the meeting.

It is worth noting that the metaverse and immersive media space was moving quickly in 2022, with universities and studios across the region trying to work out where their interests overlapped. A visit like this one served that purpose for FILKOM: a chance to hear directly from a studio actually building AR and VR products, rather than to walk away with a concrete deliverable. Nothing in FILKOM's account suggests the conversation went further than that.

For Lab MGM, the value of the fxMedia conversation lay in exposure to how a working immersive media studio approaches the same technologies the lab teaches and researches, and in laying groundwork that could inform future curriculum or research decisions around the interactive media stream. FILKOM's account stands as a record of an industry visit and discussion rather than of an active or ongoing collaboration.
