  1. 01What the App Actually Did

When Indonesia recorded its first COVID-19 cases in March 2020, Universitas Brawijaya needed a fast way to know how thousands of students, lecturers, and staff across campus were doing.

The university's answer was UB Tanggap COVID-19, an application launched in early April 2020 that combined a self screening questionnaire with location tracking and health status monitoring for the entire campus community, referred to at UB as the civitas academica. Building it was not the work of a single team. It brought together Universitas Brawijaya's COVID-19 Prevention Task Force, the university's Information and Computer Technology Unit, the Urban and Regional Planning Department at the Faculty of Engineering, and Lab MGM, short for Media, Game and Mobile Technology, at the Faculty of Computer Science.

What the App Actually Did

After a user filled in the self screening form, the system analyzed the responses and sorted people into categories based on risk. Anyone flagged as a patient under observation saw contact information for the university's task force hotline appear immediately, and the task force could follow up by text message. The app also logged each user's location at the point of registration and included a list of nearby hospitals, giving both individuals and the university a clearer, faster picture of health conditions across campus during a period when in person monitoring was difficult to organize.

UB Tanggap COVID-19 is not an example of Lab MGM partnering with an outside organization. It is Lab MGM working alongside other units of its own university, Universitas Brawijaya, to respond to a fast moving public health emergency. That internal, cross unit collaboration, spanning a task force, an IT unit, an engineering department, and a computer science lab, shows how Lab MGM's development work has, at times, served the university that houses it directly, rather than an external partner.
