Two recent papers on outdoor augmented reality carry both an Okayama University and a Universitas Brawijaya address for the same author, and that overlap is where this connection comes from.

Komang Candra Brata is listed with a dual affiliation, the Department of Information and Communication Systems at Okayama University in Japan and the Department of Informatics Engineering at Universitas Brawijaya, on both papers. His frequent coauthor is Nobuo Funabiki of Okayama University, together with fellow Okayama researcher Yohanes Yohanie Fridelin Panduman. Both papers focus on outdoor location-based augmented reality, the practice of anchoring digital content to specific real-world coordinates so it appears in the right place when viewed through a phone or headset.

Two papers, two years

The first, An Enhancement of Outdoor Location-Based Augmented Reality Anchor Precision through VSLAM and Google Street View, appeared in the journal Sensors on 9 February 2024, with Evianita Dewi Fajrianti of Okayama University as a fourth coauthor. VSLAM, short for visual simultaneous localization and mapping, is combined here with Google Street View imagery to line up virtual objects more precisely with real outdoor locations than a phone's GPS and compass alone can manage. The second paper, A Proposal of In Situ Authoring Tool with Visual-Inertial Sensor Fusion for Outdoor Location-Based Augmented Reality, was published in the journal Electronics on 17 January 2025, adding coauthors from Politeknik Negeri Malang to the same research line and describing a tool that lets a developer place virtual content on site using only a smartphone, without writing custom code for each location.

Neither paper points to a cooperation agreement between Okayama University and Universitas Brawijaya. What they show is a working relationship between individual researchers who keep publishing together, with Brata's joint appointment acting as the bridge between the two institutions and Lab MGM's ongoing interest in augmented reality research.
